At North Rocks Public School, we offer a variety of programs in the classroom and across the school to help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests.

Our Extra-curricular Highlights
Music
A specialist music teacher leads our well-resourced program, where every child attends music lessons throughout the year. Students explore musical concepts through engaging games and hands-on participation. Our music room features a wide range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments offering every student a rich musical experience.
Choir
We offer vibrant K–2 and 3–6 choir programs, providing students with numerous exciting performance opportunities. The K–2 Choir welcomes all young singers, while students in Years 3–6 can audition to join the senior choir, which performs at key school events, local ceremonies, and festivals such as the Primary Proms and Festival of Choral Music.
Debating
Our extremely successful school debating teams participate in various competitions including the Premier's Debating Challenge.
Drama Club
Our outstanding drama program encourages students to shine by developing their acting and performance skills. Each year, our students showcase their talents in a vibrant musical drama production, creating unforgettable memories and demonstrating creativity and teamwork.
Dance Group
Our K-2, 3–6 and Boys dance groups are buzzing with energy and excitement as they rehearse each week during break times. Throughout the year, students thrill audiences at various school events, showcasing their talent and teamwork. If your child loves to dance, these groups are the perfect way to get involved and shine!
Media Team
Our Media Team works hard each term to produce exciting Rocks Report Live videos that showcase school news and events. They develop valuable skills in filming, editing, and teamwork.
Gardening Club
Students learn about growing plants, sustainability, and caring for the environment. Members work together to plant and maintain seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers.. It’s an inclusive group welcoming everyone, including parents, to join!
Chess Club
The Chess Club offers students coaching to improve their skills and prepares them for exciting interschool tournaments throughout the year. It’s a great opportunity to develop strategic thinking, concentration, and friendly competition
Student Representative Council (SRC)
The Student Representative Council (SRC) invites Year 2–6 students to take an active role in shaping our school community. Representatives voice their classmates’ ideas, plan events, and develop leadership skills.
Incursions and Excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
Band
North Rocks Primary School has developed a very successful and well respected band program over many years and currently have over 150 students participating.
Children are able to join beginner band from Year 3 and need no previous experience. This extends to Year 4 to 6 students as well. However, students must commit to ongoing practice of their instrument and involvement at all band activities including sessions before school. The band program is run by teaching Services Australia and they provide professional music staff to conduct the lessons. Small group lessons and whole band rehearsals are conducted every Tuesday. Children progress to concert band as they improve and finally move up to performance band when they reach the required music level. There are opportunities for the children to perform for the whole school, parents and wider community throughout the year.
There are a range of instruments to choose from in the band, including:
- trumpet
- saxophone,
- flute
- clarinet
- trombone
- bass guitar
- drum
- percussion
- french horn
- keyboard
- euphonium.
Students pay purchase or hire instruments. A second hand instrument register is also available. Advice on instrument selection is given prior to starting in the band.
There are many benefits to children when they join band.
Some benefits include:
- helping develop social and life skills such as cooperation, patience and tolerance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with a common interest
- increasing self-esteem and confidence as they master a new skill
- performing as a group, the children can earn the recognition and respect of their peers,and they can do it in the relative safety of the group rather than having to do it on their own
- helping develop motor coordination
- providing the opportunity to learn another language that transcends culture, age, race and socio-economic status, which they can take with them and use through life
- fostering a creative and expressive outlet which can enhance emotional development
- providing them and you with proof that they can make a commitment and follow through with it.

Strings Ensemble
The NRPS Strings Program offers a range of opportunities for students to learn strings in a fun, challenging and dynamic environment with their peers.
NRPS Strings consists of two string ensembles - the Junior Strings and the Senior Strings. We also offer the Beginner Strings program which consists of weekly group lessons for students in year 2 as well as private strings lessons for students of all ages on site at the school.
The string ensembles are very active within the school community, performing at many school events including education week, the school fete and presentation evening. The Senior Strings also performs in the Festival of instrumental Music at the Sydney Opera House and at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival every year.
